Edward Tufnell was an educated Church of England vicar in early colonial Brisbane from 1860 to 1874; consecrated the first bishop of Brisbane. Tufnell had a house, Riversleigh, on North Quay, built as an investment and designed by Benjamin Backhouse. He erected Bishopsbourne, the gracious episcopal residence.

Impact On Brisbane Society

As someone educated at Wadham College, Oxford, in early Brisbane, Tufnell, represented the earliest presence of higher education for the emerging township, and he wanted to develop a comprehensive and efficient system of Church education. However, his skills was as an administrator, doing the best in holding the failing Anglican school system together during the secularist campaigns after the abolition of state aid and before the 1875 Education Act.
