Thomas Thatcher was appointed Director of External Studies, University of Queensland, from 1937. Thatcher was appointed private secretary to Governor Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams from 1915 to 1919, and was then as parliamentary reporter for the Daily Mail and leader-writer for the Sunday Mail. Thatcher set up the Queensland Social Service League.
Thomas Thatcher was a conservative member of the intelligentsia. Representing the Country and Progressive National Party, he stood unsuccessfully for the Legislative Assembly seat of Brisbane in 1929, and in 1932 for the seat of Ithaca. His work in the University external studies did much in the spread of higher education into the Queensland regions.
