One Historical Setting: Sir (Prof.) Fred Joyce Schonell, Vice-Chancellor, University of Queensland, Circular Road, John Story Building, St. Lucia (1965)
Sir Fred Schonell was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland (1960-1969). Schonell became Foundation Professor of Education at the University of Queensland in 1950. The Schonells lived in Indooroopilly.
Before coming to Brisbane, with Eleanor, Fred Schonell was Professor of Education at the University College of Swansea, University of Wales, where it is said he rejuvenated the department. Fred Schonell was the inaugural fellow (1960-1969) of the Australian College of Education, and an honorary fellow of both the Australian and British Psychological societies. He was a member of Sir Leslie Martin’s ground-breaking committee on the future of tertiary education in Australia (1961-1965). Fred was also a founding member (1954) of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust, and a director of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. Eleanor and Fred Schonell were leaders in the Queensland Spastic Children’s Welfare League. As Vice-Chancellor, Fred advocated an increase in the proportion of females in the student body, and proposed that a film be made about university education for screening in high schools around the State. During his nine year tenure, the university grew from 7,000 to 15,000 students. Eleanor Schonell was a doctoral graduate in the field at the University of Birmingham, and with her husband produced standardized ways to test children’s academic attainment.
