John Michie was the foundation Professor of Classics at the newly established University of Queensland from 1911.
University historian Malcolm Thomis saw John Michie’s appointment as “acting in close collaboration with [Governor Sir William] MacGregor against the utilitarians, who wanted a university that would meet Queensland’s practical requirements rather than one embodying traditional academic attitudes from the old world.” For Michie, unfortunately, those attitudes were limited as a translator of Latin and Greek when Michie published very little research outside the languages.
