Information

This cinema opened in 1930, becoming one of many movie theatres scattered through the Brisbane suburbs. ‘Talkies’ had recently arrived and the cinema industry was booming. The Alhambra was of the ‘tropical theatre’ style, popular in Queensland during 1920s and 1930s, in which timber lattice and fretwork was used throughout the interior to conceal high level windows that provided ventilation not used in standard cinema design. The Alhambra theatre survived into the 1960s.
