Information

Altandi bridge in Mains Road over the railway line was constructed around 1918. During the construction men who were working on the bridge used to carry the little girls across while the boys climbed up the embankment. Prior to that this was a level crossing. Mains Road in this era was a major route through the town but a narrow country road with intermitted traffic common in outlying district. The massive Mains Road of today, with the widen four lanes and a second Altandi bridge (shaped as a small ‘overpass’) replacing the narrow wooden construct, could never have been anticipated in 1918. Contrast this story to the nearby level crossing at Boundary Road, Coopers Plains, which in the same period remained unbridged despite repeated community requests and traffic headaches for motorists.
