Information

This land here was surveyed by H.C. Rawnsley in 1863. A pound for confining stray animals such as cattle, horses and sheep was established there in 1887. Stray livestock were a genuine problem for travellers on the streets of suburban Brisbane around this time. This facility was under the charge of a police-appointed pound keeper. It was closed in the 1920s following the formation of the Greater Brisbane City Council, and its former presence is marked today in the name of Pound Street.
