Information

The Annerley Baptist Church started as an extension of the Fairfield mission (see entry). The mission was constituted as a Church in Fairfield in 1912. A Sunday School mission was started at Ekibin in 1917. The property on Ipswich Road, Annerley, was purchased in 1928 for £1,625. The congregation moved to the Ipswich Road site in 1934. The site indicates the spread of Baptist congregations across the Brisbane Southside, which during the early twenieth century was probably the most formative in the local Protestant evangelisation and revivalism, with its popular cultural ideas of ‘the old-time religion’ and modern religious marketing. The Fairfield Church building was relocated and remodelled on the new site. The official opening was held on Saturday 9th February 1935. The Church at Fairfield re-started as a Sunday School mission and a new building was erected in 1940.
