Information

B.A.F.S. Dispensary was built in 1887. These co-joined buildings were constructed as a rental property for Margaret Shannon. The shops were rented to a variety of Chinese businesses until 1918. In 1919, one building was bought by the Brisbane Associated Friendly Societies (B.A.F.S.), which employed architects Chambers & Powell to remodel it for a dispensary. That same year, the other building was purchased by William Canon and Joseph Cripps to be offices for their funeral directors business. Canon & Cripps held title until 1949. Then it became Mackay Jewellers.
