Information

Built 1921-22 at the strategic commercial corner of Stanley and Vulture Streets. The Bank of NSW had seized the site in the 1890’s from a bankrupt owner. Both the 1890s Depression and the severe 1890 and 1893 Floods downgraded this site’s commercial viabiity. In 1921, ‘The Wales’ located its bank to service the expanding retail precinct and tramline that had developed around the Mater Hospital and Chardon’s Corner. In 1982, this Bank merged with the Commercial Bank of Australia to form Westpac. The bank closed in 1996 and it is now commercial offices.
