Information

The Cannon Hill Kmart Shopping Centre was one of the first large suburban Kmart stores in Brisbane, a different approach, a more modest one, to the ‘drive-in’ retail complexes that were being developed at Chermside and Toombul. By the 1970s, with smaller retail outlets constructed as part the Kmart shopping site, the phenomenon became a middle tier between the short shopping strip, still being constructed anew or re-developed, and the mega multi-level ‘retail cities’, such as Garden City. In the 1990s a fourth type of suburban shopping experience came into existence with retail warehouse parks.
