The Fairfield area was largely untouched by Europeans during the convict settlement years, but a path following the riverbank as far as Canoe (Oxley) Creek was used as a route for timber-getters. This survived as a track running off Annerley Road just beyond the cemetery, and became known as the Yeerongpilly Road, and later Cornwall Street.
