Information

Built circa 1882.Thomas Stephens bought this block, in 1856, to add to his existing holdings, giving him 125 acres. He had earlier built the first ‘Cumbooquepa’ elsewhere on his holdings. He built ‘Grange House’ on this site, possibly earlier than 1882. He had subdivided this block in 1863. Sisters Ann Love and Helen Bell bought this block in 1863 but neither lived in the House. In 1882, Janet and John Burns bought the property. John was a co-manager of his family’s Burns Philp and Co that became a major merchant shipping firm. John died in 1884 and the Burns family rented out the House until 1912. Lionel Ball bought it that year and renamed it ‘Coorooman’. Ball was appointed Chief Government Geologist in 1931. He pioneered the use of aerial photographs in geology surveys. The Ball family held title until 1956.
