The Australian naval station, HMAS Moreton, was formerly HMAS Penguin IV, the Alice Street depot, until 1940. In 1960 this site was commissioned as the new naval station, formerly a supply station for the British Royal Navy. The station was closed in 1994. By 1984 the RAN facility was very large, with a thousand navy personnel, 200 navy reservists, and the Naval Reserve Cadets.
