Information

George Marchant was a ‘socialist’ owner of a soft drink factory in Spring Hills. George and wife, Mary Jane Dwyer, had the property from 1900 until Mrs Marchant died in 1925. Marchant lived until 1944 but he donated the land to the Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Imperial League of Australia. Marchant was a Swedenborgian and had socialist principles such as a scheme of profit sharing for his workers, and paid his female employees more than the average wage in the food industry of the day.
