The Ideal opened in April 1923 with the following programme: ‘”The Valley of Silent Men,” the screen version of James Oliver Carwood’s story, in which Alma Rubens is featured, will head the programme. In the supporting picture, “Don’t Call Me Little Girl,” Mary Miles Minter occupies the role of a clever girl, who helps along a shy lover. The film is a Realart production. Comedy, cartoon, and news items also will be shown.’ The venue was also used for live theatre and variety shows. The last movie screened there was ‘Charlie Chan in Panama’ in 1940, after which time the theatre was put up for sale. By the 1950s it had become a badminton venue.
