Information

Mary Immaculate Church was opened 1932. This was the first church built for and opened by Brisbane’s Catholic Archbishop James (‘The Builder’) Duhig. It was strategically located at the boundary of multiple suburbs. A convent primary school was added to this site to ensure the spiritual education of the area’s Catholic community. Built during the Great Depression (1929-39), Dughig’s plan was to increase the Catholic Church’s physical presence across Brisbane plus provide much-needed work relief. So 30 local men were employed on this building project, which was funded through community fund-raising.
