Information

Moreton Bay Penal Settlement cemetery site ) was opened in c1825. It held over 200 convict and British military graves, when the penal colony closed in 1842. Free setters abandoned the cemetery to open their Paddington Cemetery (now Lang Park) in 1843.. The cemetery was left to rot with headstones, other markers and fencing pilfered, as Brisbane’s free settlers tried to eradicate ‘the convict stain’ from the town’s past. By 1875, Skew Street had been run through this site and it had been subdivided for land sales. This cemetery site is marked by a map plaque in E.E. McCormick Place park.
