The New Farm Powerhouse became operational in 1928. Originally the supply was owned and used for the Brisbane City Council tramway network. Street lighting and domestic house usage was a gradually increasing but secondary factor. In 1963 the powerhouse was sold to the Southern Electricity Authority, and following the closure of the tramway in 1969, the powerhouse was decommissioned in 1971. Swanbank powerhouse provided the replacement for general electrical power generation.
