The Sandgate Wading Pool opened in 1941. From planning approval in 1935, it took considerable to time in completion, due to the reconfiguration of the existing sea wall and the abolition in 1939 of the Intermittent Relief Work Works Payment Scheme which had funded the manual labour necessary for the complex public works project. The community was, however, well rewarded in a major and popular recreational site. The mid-1980s saw further development in the opening of the Sandgate swimming complex complementing the historic wading pool. Further major reconstruction in 2008 saw the creation of the Sandgate Aquatic Centre. Again the development of the recreational facility tended to complement the heritage value of the original site. Repairs and engineering improvement were carried out to retain the purpose of the large wading pool.
