Information

This was one of a series of swimming enclosures situated along the Brisbane River during the 1920s and ’30s. While initially popular, all these baths suffered occasional flooding, vandalism, neglect, and problems with the deteriorating quality of the Brisbane River waters. When the medical officer of the Brisbane City Council visited the river baths at Sherwood in September 1934, he found a dead calf and a dead pig floating in the water, and unsurprisingly the baths were closed shortly afterwards.
