Smellie’s Building was built in 1895-96. Smelle & Co was an engineering firm that ran an iron foundry in the City. The firm made building supplies, train and ship components. This was built as its brick warehouse, as the company had expanded, during the 1880s, into importing tools, machinery and metal hardware items for sale through its City shop.
