South Brisbane Cemetery was gazetted 1866. Its first burial in 1870. Sexton’s Cottage was built 1881 and the cemetery became more accessible in 1884, via the railway’s Boggo Junction (Dutton Park)Station. It’s perimeter was defined by a wall & iron railings and gates in 1888, with the wall extended in 1891. Seven acres were added to the site in 1904 and the tram reached the cemetery in 1908. In 1928, Brisbane City Council took control from the State and the BCC undertook improvements during 1930-41 and 1945-54, including ferry access. It closed for new burials in 1962 but family plot’ ‘burials continue. It contains 52 Commonwealth War Graves plus one American Civil War veteran. It is also known as Dutton Park Cemetery.
