This was one of up to 17 hotels that once stood along the length of Stanley Street, serving travellers and local residents and also the substantial local workforce that included railway and dockworkers. The Stanley Hotel was built in 1890, directly across from the Clarence Hotel at the busy Clarence Corner junction. It was renamed the Yorke in the 1900s and survived until after World War II, when it was demolished prior to the expansion of the Mater Hospital, which now owns this land.
