Built 1886 for local property speculators the Darragh family. Named the Kangaroo Point Hotel after the pub it replaced. It well-served residents plus ‘wharfies’. The Story Bridge’s completion in 1940, saw a name change to the Story Bridge Hotel in 1941. During WWII, the R.A.N. used it for sailors’ quarters . The Queensland government issued Protection of Persons and Property Orders No.1. (23 December 1941) and No.2 (23 March 1942)compelling air raid shelters on private premises holding 30 (reduced to 15) or more persons. The Hotel’s shelter was built in 1942. Postwar, it was used as a storeroom and the ‘Bomb Shelter Bar’.
