Toowong village in the 1950s had not changed much since the early century, with the ornate iron bridge over the railway line ended in the railway yards next to Patterson’s Sawmill and the stationmaster’s house facing Sherwood Road. In the days of steam there was a general goods siding and a spur line into Patterson’s to unload the logs from its mills in the Brisbane Valley. In the 1930s this line was used to unload the Helidon sandstone used to build the University of Queensland; the sandstone was unloaded using a hand-cranked crane from the yard.
