A Reserve for Public Purposes was proclaimed over 4 portions of the agricultural reserve on 18 July 1884. Although it is not clear that a town had been officially proclaimed, the first sale of town and suburban allotments was held on 26 May 1887. Eighteen of the 40 town allotments of ¼ acre (0.1 hectare) in Sections I and II were sold and 8 of 10 suburban lots of 2 to 4 acres (0.8 to 1.6 hectares). At the next sale, on 27 March 1888, all remaining town and suburban lots were sold. Following this success, the sale of the remaining four town sections (IV to VII) was held on 25 June 1889, the most favourable lots at an increased upset price. Following the three sales, about 87% of 120 town lots were sold, the least interest being in those furthest from the railway station. All of the 22 suburban lots were sold.
