Information

The transference of the University of Queensland from the original Gardens Point campus to the St Lucia campus was a long and delayed process. It was not possible with what colloquially referred to as ‘the Mayne Inheritance’ (from Dr James and May Emelia Mayne; not confused with a tale of a crime novel), originally 700 acres donated in 1923, but more significantly the donation of £55,000 in 1926 for the resumption of the St Lucia land. Further generous Mayne donations were not enough, and lack of finance delayed the effort. The main and first permanent building of the new campus, the Forgan Smith building, was not completed until 1939. The requirements of the building for military use during World War II delayed the full transfer of university operations until 1947 [?].
