The Milton Brewery was established at Milton in 1870. Victorian brothers Nicholas and Edward Fitzgerald bought the failing distillery in 1877 and opened a new brewery which they named Castlemaine after a brewery they already owned in Castlemaine, Victoria. The following year the first beer was brewed there in 1878 and was named XXX Sparkling Ale.
