Information

The Cliento family were Brisbane south-siders with the very notable national profile in medicine, community welfare, and refugee work. Their children also forged successful careers, particularly actress Diane Cilento who married Sean Connery. Their large Queenslander house was on the corner of Villa Street and Ipswich Road, and was the family home from the 1930s to the 1960s. Lady Phyllis Cilento had a medical practice attached to the residence, and was a respected gynocologist, obstetrician, and paediatrician. In 1931 she founded the Mothercraft Association of Queensland, serving as president until 1946. Sir Raphael West (Ray) Cilento was an expert in tropical medicine. In September 1934 Cliento became the first Queensland Director-General of Health and Medical Services. From 1945 to 1950 he served with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, in the Balkans, Germany, and at the UN Headquarters in New York. Although he was a scholar of some standing, and historical researcher –he was three-times the President of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, his ultra-conservative views on the subjects of colonialisation and the White Australia policy put him on the wrong side of history during his lifetime.
