Opened 1874. It was originally surveyed for a public park reserve in 1864. In 1869, the Queensland colonial government set aside 55 acres of land for a burial ground to be called the Kangaroo Point Cemetery. It was a hillside site that was well-located at the corner where the main thorougfare of Wynnum Road met Bennett’s Road. As the area was known as Morningside, it became the Morningside Cemetery but it was also commonly known as Bulimba Cemetery. The first interment was in 1874 and one of the cemetery’s early trustees, Frederick Wecker was buried in the highest point, within the grounds. In 1891, the cemetery reserve was reduced in size to just under 15 acres. The lost land was used to create Balmoral Park and the graveyard became known as Balmoral Cemetery. It closed in the 1960s, with over 14,900 graves including Commonwealth War Graves, local politicians and Goanna oil founder Joseph Marconi. Family plot burials are still permitted.
