Early suburban development in Balmoral was restricted due to the relative difficulty of obtaining transport. There was originally no tram service to the Bulimba/Balmoral area, although Bulimba was serviced by a river ferry. This changed in 1925 when a tramline from the city was extended from the Norman Creek bridge along Wynnum and Riding Roads to Barton Road, and later to Oxford Street/Riding Road in November 1935. Not only did this greatly stimulate residential settlement in the local area, the naming of this tram terminus as ‘Balmoral’ was another step in the eventual naming of the eponymous suburb. The last tram trip in Brisbane ran from Balmoral to Ascot on 13 April 1969.
