Information
Former (1840s-1850s) Burial site of many Aboriginals including Dundalli, the most famous Aboriginal resistance leader of the peoples north of Brisbane. During the early Colonial period, this area was the designated Cemetery for Aboriginals in Brisbane, as organised by Anglican Christ Church (traditional Aboriginal funerary practices were not permitted near the settlement, so any Aboriginals who died or were killed whilst amongst whites were interred here). The area was south-west of the current church location (now under Hale Street). Dundalli’s head was removed sometime after Burial for sale, and all skeletal remains were removed from this site in the 1990s for the widening of Hale Street and the creation of Suncorp Statium.
