Information
This opened as an 800-seat open-air theatre in August 1912. The feature film shown that night was an Australian cowboy drama called ‘The Colonel’s Ward’. The ‘talkies’ era was ushered in there with the installation of new sound equipment in 1930. The theatre, which at various times was also known as Mowbray Park Pictures and the Mowbray Park Picture Theatre, underwent extensive renovations in 1939, but during the 1940s it seemed to be used mainly for amateur boxing nights. The theatre closed to become an ice skating rink in 1960, and was later demolished to make way for the widening of Shafston Avenue.
