Information
Queensland Deposit Bank was built in 1923, Architects: Atkinson & Conrad. This Q. D. B. was established in 1886. It survived the 1890s Depression and benefited from the 920s building boom. Halliday’s Turkish Baths occupied the building’s basement, as it had previously been on this site. The Q.D.B. was a victim of the Great Depression (1929-39). A customers’ run on deposits led it to merge with the Brisbane Permanent Building Society in 1931, The building society sold the Q.D.B. to the Commercial Bank of Australia (C.B.A.) in 1932 and it became a C.B.A. branch. C.B.A. merged with Westpac in 1982 and this building remained a bank branch until 2000.
