Information
Built 1929, Architects: Addison and MacDonald. Queensland National Bank began in 1872 and was one of a number Queensland banks opened to encourage local investment and development. The South Brisbane branch building was constructed on a strategic commercial location known as ‘Bayard’s Corner’. The Bank benifited from the passing Melbourne Street tramline, the nearby South Brisbane Railway Station that handled interstate rail traffic and the forthcoming (1932) William Jolly/Grey Street traffic bridge. It offered a challenge to that Queensland bank’s main rival of the Commonwealth Bank, which already had its branch nextdoor in Grey Street. In 1949, ithe Bank became a National Bank of Australasia branch, after the NBA takeover of the Queensland National Bank. It closed in 1978. The building was privatetly purchased in 1983 and converted to the residence ‘NG House’.
