Information
Five acres of land at Yeronga was set aside in 1920 as the ‘Reserve for Refuge of Aged and Starving Horses and Lost and Strayed Dogs’. Annual placements for dogs at the reserve were initially less than 20, growing to almost 1,000 per year after the RSPCA purchased a vehicle to help them better respond to calls and complaints in 1925. By 1951, the annual intake of dogs and cats exceeded 9,200. The reserve became the site of the RSPCA headquarters (formerly in Brisbane City) in 1963. The centre closed in 2011 when the RSPCA moved to a new facility at Wacol.
