Opened 1937, Architect: Frank Cullen. Despite the Great Depression (1929-39), Brisbane’s Catholic Archbishop James Duhig embarked on an ambitious building program of churches, convents or schools, of which St Luke’s is an example. Duhig (nicknamed ‘The Builder’) preferred prominent sites, in which to display the prominence of Roman Catholicism. So this Spanish Mission style church was built on a hilltop location accessing both Taylor and Queen Streeets.
