Built 1942, Outbreak of Pacific War (8 December 1941) led the Queensland Government to order the Brisbane City Council to build 200 concrete, pillbox public shelters. On 23 March 1942, the state instructed Council to build an extra 50 shelters in or near the City plus 25 suburban shelters. Council’s City Architect Frank Costello designed all shelters, for reuse after the war. He designed three types of public shelters – standard pillbox, bus waiting shed or park shelter. The 44 park shelters had a double cantilever roof supported by central columns emplaced on a concrete floor. They had all of their exterior walls removed to convert them, post-war, into open, picnic shelters. This shelter was completed by June 1942 to serve the Stones Corner shops precinct. Brisbane air raid shelter construction ceased in 1943. It is used as a outdoor reading shelter for the Stones Corner Library.
