Information
The West End Brewery was established in a commanding timber building on the corner of Montague Road and Merivale Street in 1886 by Lanfear, Nicol and Company. It quickly developed into a thriving business and soon became one of Brisbane’s biggest beer producers, but the brewery suffered devastating damage during the flood of February 1893. The water rose as high as the second floor of the central tower, and completely wrecked the surrounding buildings. Despite these massive losses, the West End Brewery was rebuilt and enlarged as an imposing brick structure and by the following year the owners were claiming to have the largest output of beer in Queensland. However, the business closed in 1913 and the premises was turned into a bottling factory.
