Built in the 1880s, Architect F.D.G. Stanley. It replaced the bush-timber Clarence Hotel that had be put on the same site, in 1863, by Thomas Hayselden. Queensland’s ecomomic boom during the 1880s, allowed for many of the earlier timber buildings to be replaced by larger and more substantial, masonary premises such as the Clarence Corner Hotel. The hotel was an early ‘watering hole’, serving the businesses and shoppers of the southern section of Wooloongabba’s business centre. Such was the landmark status of the hotel on this strategic site, at the intersection of Stanley Street and Annerly Road that the local area became known as ‘Clarence Corner’.
