Opened in 1953 and operated by the RSL (formerly RSSAILA), the Kingshome Rehabilitation Centre holds active intellectual significance in Brisbane’s history as a focal point for the institutionalization of care and vocational recovery for veterans. By integrating medical services with occupational therapy and craft workshops, the centre moved beyond mere residency to foster a rehabilitative environment grounded in educare (training) and the practical application of skill. This approach represents an early site for the “craftsmanship of the reflexive insider,” where veterans could reclaim Human Authorship over lives disrupted by conflict through tangible engagement with their environment. Its evolution from a 1937 soldiers’ home to a specialized therapeutic facility reflects a broader intellectual shift toward viewing rehabilitation as a dynamic process of holistic flourishing, anchored in the practical realities of the individual’s lived experience.
