Information
When James Toohey died in 1883 he was buried in South Brisbane Cemetery. However when his wife, Ann, died at the end of 1901 she was buried in the “Toohey Private Cemetery” which was on a section of land donated to the Catholic Church by the will of James Toohey, for the purpose of building a church on this land. James Toohey’s remains were said to have been re-interred at this site and six other Toohey family members were also buried there. In 1913 the land of the James Toohey Estate was resumed by the Crown and 262ha of James Toohey’s land was declared a Cemetery Reserve. Sometime after the Mount Gravatt Cemetery was begun in 1918, the remains of James and Ann Toohey and other Toohey family members were re-interred in a large Toohey family plot within the Mount Gravatt Cemetery.
