For half a century, from 1928 to 1984, Phyllis Cilento was Queensland leading health writer. Cilento was a local general medical practitioner in Annerley was a Fellow of the International Academy of Preventive Medicine (1978) and a life member (1980) of the Australian Medical Association. She was also the first Queenslander of the Year (1981) and Queensland Senior Citizen of the Year (1987). Cilento became the inaugural President of the Queensland Medical Women’s Society in 1929, a member of the Crèche & Kindergarten Association of Queensland, and a member of the inaugural council of the Family Planning Association of Queensland. Cilento was also active in National Council of Women of Queensland, the Business and Professional Women’s Association, and the Lyceum Club (1951-52). The Cliento settled in Annerley but moved to Toowong.
Phyllis Cilento’s reputation in history stands above her husband, although there is some evidence that she shared some of her husband’s reactionary-type conservative worldview. See entry on Ray Cilento.
