Gordon Greenwood was Professor of Modern History at the University of Queensland from 1949 to 1982. He was Head of the Department of History from 1949 to 1978.

Impact On Brisbane Society

Gordon Greenwood arrived in Brisbane, from Sydney, as the McCaughey Professor of History at the University of Queensland in 1949. Greenwood was the Federal President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs from 1961 to 1965. He founded the Australian Journal of Politics and History in 1955 and edited it until 1982. Greenwood represented Australia at Commonwealth and United Nations conferences. Greenwood was a member (1950) of the Social Science Research Council of Australia and then fellow (1971) of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. He was also a member of the Australian Humanities Research Council (1956) and fellow (1969) of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He was a difficult character in the University of Queensland community for his drinking and god-professor attitudes, but Greenwood was greatly respected for taking the history discipline in Queensland out of its shallow provincialism. He died on 4 November 1986 in South Brisbane.
